In observance of World No Tobacco Day, the Integrated Provincial Health Office (IPHO) of Lanao del Sur, headed by Provincial Health Officer II Dr. Alinader D. Minalang, organized an event on June 9, 2025, at the Capitol in Marawi City. This initiative underscores the commitment to promoting a smoke-free and healthier Bangsamoro.

The event attracted a diverse group of stakeholders, including representatives from the Provincial Government of Lanao del Sur, Philippine National Police (PNP), Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), Philippine Army, DXSO Radyo Pilipinas, Maradeca Inc., the Philippine Women’s Council, PhilHealth, and the Supreme Student Government of Mindanao State University. Additionally, members from the Muslim Women Council of Lanao del Sur participated. The program featured a lively Zumba session, followed by a Health Forum aimed at inspiring participants to take a stand against smoking. The forum, titled “Clearing the Air: The Truth About Smoking, Vaping, and Lung Health,” included insightful presentations from medical professionals.

Dr. Mohammad Alisar Abdullatif, an Internal Medicine-Pulmonologist from Amai Pakpak Medical Center, delivered an evidence-based presentation on the health risks associated with smoking and vaping. Provincial Health Officer and Pediatric Infectious Disease Specialist, Dr. Princess Elham A. Sacar, spoke about “Silent Harm: The Health Effects of Secondhand Smoke on Infants, Children, and Youth,” emphasizing the serious threats that secondhand smoke poses to young lives.

From a spiritual perspective, Aleem Zacaria Candao shared meaningful insights on the religious implications of tobacco use, aligning health advocacy with faith-based teachings.

In his keynote address, Dr. Minalang stressed that this initiative is more than just an annual campaign; it is a vital call to action. He highlighted that this year’s celebration of World No Tobacco Day serves as a testament to what can be achieved through unified efforts. With ongoing collaboration among the health sector, security forces, faith leaders, youth organizations, and local governments, Lanao del Sur continues its journey toward becoming a Tobacco-Free Province.
