The Provincial Government of Lanao del Sur has expressed its strong support for a newly approved research initiative led by Mindanao State University (MSU) aimed at conserving the endemic fish species of Lake Lanao. The commitment was affirmed during a coordination meeting held today at the Vice Governor’s Conference Room, Provincial Capitol, Marawi City.
The project, titled “S&T Intervention towards Conservation and Management of the Endemic Cyprinids of Lake Lanao,” was recently approved under the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development’s (DOST-PCAARRD) Grants-In-Aid (GIA) program.
Provincial representatives, including Mr. Pili M. Papandayan, Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer, and Mr. Abdullah D. Datu-Haron, Agriculturist II from the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist, committed to supporting the project, particularly in coordinating logistics and ensuring the safety of researchers during fieldwork. Officials described the research as a critical step toward preserving Lake Lanao’s biodiversity and safeguarding the livelihoods of communities that rely on its natural resources. They highlighted the importance of science-based solutions in addressing the environmental challenges faced by the lake.
The MSU-led study will focus on identifying and preserving endemic cyprinid species, investigating ecological threats, and examining the socio-economic conditions of fishing communities. Fieldwork is scheduled to take place across multiple municipalities surrounding Lake Lanao, including Marawi City, Marantao, Balindong, Bacolod-Kalawi, Ganassi, Binidayan, Lumbatan, Masiu, Taraka, Ditsaan-Ramain, and Madalum.
MSU researchers expressed their gratitude for the province’s strong support, noting that local government cooperation will be key to the success of the project and the long-term conservation of Lake Lanao.
