In line with its ongoing efforts to promote youth health and well-being, the Provincial Government of Lanao del Sur (PLGU) through the Provincial Health Office (PHO), celebrated June as National No Smoking Month and International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking (IDADAIT) with a Health Promotion and Awareness Lecture on Substance Use and Abuse. The event took place on June 23, 2025, at the Balindong Municipal Gymnasium, attended by more than 300 Grade 11 students and faculty from Balindong National High School.
The PHO organized the event to educate senior high school students about the dangers of substance use, abuse, and addiction. Dr. Johanna Casan-Adiong led an interactive session that highlighted the harmful effects of commonly abused substances, including drugs, cigarettes, alcohol, and vape products, using data from global, national, and local sources.
Throughout the lecture, Islamic faith-based reminders were shared, emphasizing moral responsibility, self-discipline, and the importance of caring for one’s health as a spiritual duty.
Participants received school supply kits and educational brochures on substance abuse to reinforce the key messages of the lecture. The program included an open forum and Q&A session, where attendees enjoyed snacks and had the chance to win prizes.
The event concluded with student representatives signing a commitment tarpaulin, pledging to stand against substance abuse. This initiative highlights the PLGU’s commitment to preventive education and the holistic development of youth in the province.
